We have been maintaining a frontline blockade in takayna / Tarkine’s Pieman River ancient forests since late 2020.

Proposed construction of a massive toxic, acid-producing tailings dam and logging in the Pieman River area of takayna / Tarkine would destroy rainforest and the wildlife that depend on it. This is home to the Masked Owl, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Spotted-tailed Quoll and Tasmanian Devil.

In February 2020 we occupied this coupe and forced the retreat of the logging machines, and since January 2021 we have been holding Chinese state-owned mining giant MMG at bay. Over 400 volunteers have spent time on this front line, with over 70 arrested stopping the machines. But the miners and loggers are still scheduled to return. We plan to stay in place to stop them again.

The tall ancient eucalyptus forests and rainforests of takayna / Tarkine are one of Earth’s great treasure. They are also rich and essential carbon storehouses in the face of the climate emergency.

Hi there, will be heading to Tasmania from the ACT on the 17th of Jan. My friend and I are interested in coming & supporting the frontline in whatever way we can. I’ve been to a forest blockade in the Tarkine in 2018 so am somewhat familiar with the ethic/protocol of being in the space! Please give me a ring to let us know details. We have a car and are happy to bring supplies.

Go for it! We went through the Tarkine recently, and it is too precious to touch. Needs to be heritage listed, and protected forever!

This Forrest was showcased recently on T V by Sir David Attenborough . They are the tallest eucalypts in the World and the only place in the world that they grow also one of the only untouched wilderness areas left. This area of Tasmania needs to be given heritage status to ensure it is never touched and protected forever Shame on Australia for even thinking of logging them they are up to 1000 years old and have been there long before white man even new that Australia existed. Also home to endangered animals such as the last refuge on earth of the eastern Quoll they need to be protected forever shame shame shame on the Tasmanian government for even thinking of destroying this unique part of the world
